A five-star efforts

After captaining Seymour to a CBL championship, Robbie Sartori was included in the All-Star 5 north-east conference team alongside Shepparton's Sam Beks.

Neither Shepparton team could bring home silverware in the Country Basketball League, but acknowledgement of their star players came from Basketball Victoria.

The Gators and Lady Gators exited their respective competitions at a semi-finals stage this month.

But Rhianna Barton and Sam Beks made it into the All-Star 5 teams for the north-east conference.

Playing a starring role as a forward, Beks consistently racked up double-figure points as he built on his development with the Gators’ Big V side across the winter.

Beks was joined in the men’s side by his Big V Shepparton teammate, Seymour’s Robbie Sartori, who has produced a phenomenal season.

His Blasters outfit was crowned champion of the competition, defeating Wodonga Wolves in the final.

Sartori scored an impressive 197 points for the season, dominating opposition with his accuracy in making three-point shots.

Barton can always be relied upon in big games and this was reflected in her inclusion into the women’s side.

Barton topped her side’s scoring in most Lady Gators matches and finished the season with 190 points, the second highest in the division.

Her potency around the basket had opposition sides wary of her influence, as she converted 76 two-pointers at an average of 15.83 a game.

At just 21, CBL coach Chris Judd said Barton played beyond her years.

‘‘She’s one of the elite players, Rhianna is an extremely good and conscientious player, she’s mentally tough and she’s also physically tough, which just pushes her through most times,’’ he said.

‘‘She’s played with a bit of a knee problem (this season), but every game she’s there and super reliable and just works really hard.’’

Judd chose Barton as captain this season and was rewarded with how she encouraged young players including Kior Zito and Maddi Dowling in their development.
